Stories plus Genealogy

Today I would like to talk about things I think is important for anyone who is interested in their family tree. As you know family trees is the in thing today, genealogy is the in thing today. You see advertising about it on television. Ancestry.ca is advertising it. They have a show called “Who do you think you are”. They have a similar show in Britain too. They have a movie on TV way back about Alex Haley’s “Roots”. How many of you watched it night after night? Remember there was Kinto or Kinta, and there was Chicken Little I think. Anyway it was long ago and I remember being glued to the TV enjoying it so very much.

It wasn’t just about born a certain date, married a certain date, and died a certain date. There was the in between time which was important. So this is why I believe in getting all the stories and information down about each ancestor of mine that I am able too. If I could go back in time and speak to my ancestors ,what a tale they would have to tell me. But that is impossible, all I can do is read what is written about them, and I am sure there would have been lots more stories they would have been able to share. What they did for entertainment for example or how and where they met their spouse and how they felt when their first child was born and did they come in contact with a wild animal and how did they handle the situation. I know they killed the animals but could there have been a bear for example that they came in contact with ?

We read in the newspaper about bear encounters, and crocodiles and alligators ,it is sad to read but it is the truth so how many of our ancestors had similar stories? We will never know unless we find some old newspapers well preserved hidden somewhere. So how can we make it better for the people coming after we are gone? Well gather stories for them. If your parents or grandparents are living I bet they would love to share some of their stories with you. Aunts and Uncles sometimes know more than we think. Stop by the nursing homes, or hospitals ,spend a day with your relatives, ask them questions, once they start talking you might get a lot of information about their parents or grandparents. Start looking through older newspapers in your area or where your grandparents lived, you can find these newspapers at your local library or archives. I have done this, I spent hours looking though newspapers, sometimes I found nothing, other times I hit pay dirt. I even found my birth announcement in the local paper. Sort of neat to see. So if you are thinking of doing your family tree, make it into a story, make it enjoyable for others to read, make it into a book, but most of all Just Make It.

Everything is beautiful

Hello everyone, haven't blogged in a few days.I am in the process of moving and that is a big job, I have a trailer full of boxes that I hope to go unload tomorrow,we have our new place for the 15th which is Monday.Tonight I go get the key to the apartment. I am very happy with the new place it has NO carpets and that is a plus, only drawback is I need to take the rubbish out way in the back and I have seven steps to climb. Otherwise, it is a nice building. Now my computer has been giving me so many problems, I bought it around three months ago and my window internet explorer is not working good at all, it was installed when I bought the computer so I need to reformat my computer I need to bring it down to where I bought it. Now the big job is saving my files and photos, I have an external hard drive but its packed, don't ask me where. So I need to get some DVDs and save my photos, my files are already stored. I have Legacy family tree software and I am hoping I don' t lose my information, I created some gedcom files and saved them.
I have my laptop as a backup while I wait for this one to be fixed.
I am still working on my genealogy and helping others when I can one of my projects is at a stand still, still waiting for some information from the person who wants it. So far no word.
And many of you know I have a website named acadian-roots.com  well I created a subdomain for my store and yesterday I created a forum in my site for the ones who want to add their store urls and join in on other topics. What did our ancestors do  for fun in their days?
Have you ever wondered about this? Well in case you don't know, I am everywhere and on Facebook I started some discussions which seems to be keeping everyone interested and my latest discussion was about Halloween. Well what does this have to do with ancestors?  I didn't think it did at first but since I posted  on FB I spoke to my Mom who is 92 and would you believe when we were young Dad and Mom dressed up at Halloween and took us children out? We are seven in my family but the time she told me about we were six of us. I had to be around five years old and Mom said that she took old coats and tore the inside linings out, made some costumes and masks and then she even tore up some old clothes for costumes, dressed us and out we went. This paticular day she said they walked to the end of the road (they lived in the country) and when they got there it began raining so our costumes and masks were all sopping wet. When we got home Mom said that the dye from the mask she had made had run down all over her face which made it black.  Now I could not imagine my parents going out on Halloween, so if they went out,what about their parents (our grandparents) Did they celebrate Halloween Night? If they lived in the country and the houses were far apart, did they still go out? These are all things that would be nice to know and to add to our notes about them. And speaking of Halloween ,if you are planning a halloween party for the children or for the adults  now is the time to order your invitations, posters, and even badges and mugs to give out as prizes at your party.

Blogs and Websites

Have you even been at a point where you cannot think or have what they call a senior moment? Well guess what, I think I have reached it. grin. So I am on a blog that doesn't know which way it is going. I hope that I can keep you interested. I have four blogs to do. One on my space, one on zazzle and two on here.  Some are not as active as others. My most used one is this blog because I started this one to go along with my acadian-roots.com website. I was going to talk a lot about Acadians and genealogy but I think my readers would like to read other things too.
Now as you noticed I have recently been talking about my store and posting photos but I feel as if I am sufforcating everyone, seeing as many are not interested in my gallery  and again there are many who are interested, so I have decided to create another blog, which I have done so but I have not connected it anywhere so far. So now what am I going to do? Well if you look at my genealogy site at http://www.acadian-roots.com/    you will notice how my site is set up, so I am now setting up another website on the same principle for my store. I intend on blogging there too . My website will be devoted to my store and other stores and I hope to have it created so it will be interesting to go there. I will keep you posted. But don't worry I will still be blogging here.
At the moment regarding genealogy I have been asked to do a two different family trees for someone, I am trying to go into details to make their books interesting, such as find the obituaries, finding some little stories and adding photos, I think this is much better than just writing John was a son of  Fred and Mable, he was born1500 and died in 1567. But if I say John was born in a little village on the outskirts of Manitoba  and at the age of 19 he married the neighbor Joe Smith's daughter and  they settled in Manitoba where John worked as a butcher and  he was called to active duty  etc etc etc.  When I did my family tree which I am always adding to when I come across something. I wrote that my great grandfather married in New Brunswick ,he went where there was work ,for a while they were in Nova Scotia then they went to Maine next they returned home. So as you can see this is much more interesting to read. For the ones of you who are into genealogy  maybe just beginning? As you hear stories or read stories about your ancestors write them down, you can always begin with your parents, how did they meet? Does your Mother remember how your Father proposed to her? I think I told you a few blogs ago, that my Dad sold his bike for three dollars and he paid for the licence and for Mom's wedding band with it. I find that so romantic. I am so sorry that I could not talk to my grandmothers when they were living, but back then i wasn't into genealogy, so if your grandparents  are living ,ask them questions, I am sure they would love to tell you things, as I have said many times "once they are gone, so are their memories". We need to keep their memories alive.

My Momma Told Me

Today I would like to share something with you about my Mom. First of all I want to talk about the photo  of her sitting with a valentine postcard. My mother who is 92 has been a collector all her life. She has saved things since she was a little girl, and has told us stories about them. Like the little basket she has which was made with porcupine quills and given to her when she was around 9 years old from a little native american friend she met in Cape Breton where her father worked for a while.  And the christening dress her mother and her made for her first baby  and then she used it for all of her children, including me, then many of her grandchildren also were baptized in that same dress.  She had a set of granite pie plates that she had when she was first married in 1932 that she has given to me, and I will treasure them for as long as I live. So now we get to the photo and her valentine. This postcard which I made for her with her original valentine is what you see in the photo above. The reason she had me make these postcards was because her valentine was given to her 86 years ago when she was six years old and it was given to her by her teacher. She treasured that valentine all these years and kept it in immaculate condition, and we are seven in my family and she could not give it to everyone so we came up with the idea of me creating a postcard with her valentine, which I did and in the back I put that it was a copy of her valentine she got in 1924 when she was six years old. I also added  from top to bottom where the line goes, "With Love from Mom.  She ordered 16 of them and they came in this week, she is so proud of those postcards, she wants to give us each one for Christmas with a note from her on the back, even it is a valentine it is very special for  my family.  And also a great souvenir.

Now something else she shared with me this week, was her wedding ring, I did not know this but she told me in 1932 ,my Dad sold his bicycle for three dollars and bought Mom a wedding ring, and he paid for the marriage license  too. Mom said she had the ring for a long time but one day someone spilled some mercury on it and it melted. But to me this story is so interesting because I can add this little tidbit in my family tree notes, and maybe one day one of my descendants might enjoy reading all about my Mom and my family.  I hope you enjoyed this little story. A dog never forgets

There is a saying that a dog never forgets, and we really believe this to be true. Today we went to visit our dog Thunder whom we haven't seen in at least two years. We had to give him to a good home because of health reasons. Anyway we had tried to see him a few times but the owners were away. So today thinking they would be away again was sort of dissappointing but we took a chance anyway. Driving up the old country dirt road, we arrived at the end of the road where there was a trailer there. We turned in the yard and there was a vehicle in the yard. I got out of the car and asked the lady who was hanging her clothes to dry on the line if they still had Thunder. Why yes! she replied. I said we were his former owners, she was very nice and invted us in. Thinking Thunder would not recognize us, we went in, but we were very wrong. Thunder ran to me and to my friend. Dog kisses were flying let me tell you. Then Thunder laid on his back for me to rub his belly, something I used to do. It was a very nice visit, and when we got ready to leave,Thunder figured " I'm going to" but they brought him in for a treat and we were on our way.We felt very good when we left because now we know Thunder is in a happy home, he can run and play where the traffic is nil, he can go into the woods if he wants to and he has a new playmate called Lightning, another corgi just like him only younger. The new owners told us we are welcome to visit anytime we want to, so that was nice of them. We won't go very often, because now that is Thunder's new home .

Mother Told Me

Well a few days ago , I went to visit my Mom, and when I go I  usually ask her about her past,she is now 92 and her memory is unbelievable, oh she does repeat some same stories but just the same she is one amazing lady.
Anyway this paticular visit, I went in and she was reading the newspaper which she does every morning faithfully. Then she began talking ,she said her father was a jack of all trades and he was a teacher in Maine before he met my grandmother and when they married and had their family,Mom said he used to tutor them at home when he was there,because by then he travelled a lot seeking work. He used to file saws and axes.
Mom said she remembers that he used to read to them by the candlelight from a book by Robbie Burns. Yes the poet. Now this would be back in the mid 1920s.
Mom said her father thought education was very very important and he wanted his children to be educated. Now Mom said her mother (my grandmother )went to grade three in school  and her spelling was not good ,but she wanted to write to my grandfather when he was away, so Mom told me, my grandmother would sit by the candlelight and Mom would sit next to her and  Grandmother would ask Mom how to spell a certain word and Mom  helped her or if she made a mistake in spelling Mom would be by her side correcting her. Now I found this very interesting because it made me feel like I was there, it made me feel  good knowing about my grandparents, how they lived, if you are into genealogy or family trees you probably understand what I mean. Our ancestors were much more than names and dates, they were human like you and I, they lived, they loved, they cried, they laughed. So these  are things for us to know and cherish and pass down to our children and their children. If you have some relatives who can share stories like these, visit them, ask them questions,and write down all that you can find.

Who is P'tit Francois and what Contest?

Hello everyone,today I was thinking about what I could blog about . Sometimes I
have tons of ideas and topics today it is early so the topics are few . grin.
So what about P'tit Francois? Well first of all P'tit Francois is a weekly storyline in the french L'Etoile paper in New Brunswick Canada ,it is written by Everard Maillet who speaks as if he is P'tit Francois. P'tit Francois is an Acadian man who lives in Bouctouche Bay (Fond de la Baie). He was living alone in his cabin and along comes two widows complicating his life. One is Rose Smallwood who comes from Montreal and the other one is Edmee who comes from Memramcook.Both women has their eye on P'tit Francois. The article is in French and I have been given permission to translate it to English on my website at http://www.acadian-roots.com/ .  When you get to my site the first page automatically switches to the page with the sidebar on the left side, you will see P'tit Francois ,click there and the newest story will be the last one . This week's story is titles" Ate too much spaghetti.".  And this week P'tit Francois has started a Mother's Day Contest you can read about it on my website . Anyone can enter ,and one entry per person.What I like about the contest it that we have to write a couple of sentences about why we love our Mothers or why she was special to us. I hope you will stop by Acadian-Roots and read his little stories. The french version is much better than the english version because he uses slang, I try to translate as best I can.

Photos,and Genealogy

As I have mentioned time and time again, photos are very important, they are a part of our history. I cannot stress enough how important it is for us to identify the photos.We need to identify the ones we now have, so that the next generations won't have the problems some of us are having identifying old photos. My mother in law passed away in 1976 and she had so many photos with no names to let us know who they were.She had one which we believe one of the two women would be her mother, but we cannot tell which one, and we are not certain of this. If it is her, that is the only photo we have of her. I went to yard sales and flea markets and saw some beatiful photos of people of long ago again no names, that is probably why they are in yard sales they are unknowns,unidentified. It is such a shame. I am sure you must all agree. So we have to make sure our descendants do not say the same thing about our generations, that we never noted who our people were. Another thing we should do in order to preserve our precious photos is not to keep them all to ourselves, share them. The more people who has a photo of our grandparents,the more chance the photo has to survive. Many things can happen to photos, they can be lost, or be in a burning building, or even stolen, if we have ten photo copies instead of only one then the picture will survive much longer. If you have a group , ask them to share their photos. I have a group on Facebook called Old Photos of New Brunswick, and we have a lot of photos posted there, a great idea. And along with being a good idea, we have a chance of coming across new photos of our relatives and ancestors. And photos are also important to go along with our genealogy. Our genealogy is history ,it is about who our ancestors were, where we come from. And putting a face and stories along with the names and dates makes a big difference .
When I first started my family tree, that is what I had, he was born, married and died. Not exciting huh? Now I have he was a captain ,owned his own vessel,sailed up and down the Fundy coast. Now do you see what I mean? And If every a photo of that captain were to show up can you imagine how exciting that would be?
And speaking of genealogy, I would like to add that I have added a few more genealogy products in my shop. Today I made a binder ,you can see it in my Acadian/Cajun folder but it is not only for Acadian and Cajuns, I didn't know what folder to put it in. Also I made a few more genealogy Tshirts in my Tshirt and Acadian folders. Plus I did a few Valentines, and some poodle things.

I also have created some USA postage stamps, they are approved by the USA Post, and one of the stamps, is of three little children and guess what? One of the children is me. So I feel honored to be on a USA postage stamps, you can also find the stamps on my site. When I told Mom what I did, she replied "We have to buy some" grin.
